Country music has more radio stations than any other format. This style of music originated in the 1920s and evolved to include honky tonk, urban cowboy, today’s new country, bluegrass and western swing. Country programming is geared towards people 25 years and older, with slightly more female than male listeners. The genre can be sub-divided into several categories:
Hit country, which is the country version of the top 40. It may also be called hot country, new country or young country.
Classic country plays mainly songs from the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s. It’s also known as oldies country or gold country.
Ranchera is a Spanish language form of country popular in Texas, the southwest United States and Mexico.
