Religious radio programming is an umbrella term that covers radio programming from a wide variety of Christian denominations as well as other religions. Listeners are mostly 35 years and older, with more females than males. Music, preaching and instructional programming are components of this format. The genre can be sub-divided into the following categories:
Contemporary Christian is pop and contemporary music produced by Christian artists. Christian rock is closely related.
Black gospel music is a radio format inspired by the upbeat religious music from black churches, with some preaching and instructional programming as well as music.
Southern gospel is religious music with country and soft rock roots, and preaching and instructional programming may be broadcast.
Other religious formats include Islamic and Buddhist religious broadcasts, which vary in programming.
